After my wife and I left Mammoth Cave, we had to go back through the way we came, as the ferry was closed. I decided to take this opportunity to film the outside of the Thomas House in Horse Cave.
*House Background*
Though I'm not a historian on the place I've heard alot about it. It seems that Dr. Thomas was a fine physician, and skilled surgeon early 1900's-ish. He was apparently an eccentric and was labled by the (quite self-righteous) locals as a libertine. In this house, in the cellar, was where he stored the famous glass coffin, and subsequently, the body of Mr. Floyd Collins himself while he owned it. It was partially this "property" that led to his wealth as it was a sort of side-show that folks would pay sometimes as much as TWO DOLLARS to see.
Now, the city has renovated the ground level, and soon will work on the second when funding is avaliable.
*My background w/the house*
I was invited to a political fundraiser at the house which would be its first public viewing after the restoration. During the set-up (only two women involved) the lights kept switching off. The first time was after one of the women said "would't it be odd if Dr. Thomas came to the party?" Just as they started to laugh, the lights clicked off. I say clicked, because they're the old type lights with an off button and an on button, and it was audible.
At the party, in the "old" part of the house, I kept feeling like I was being watched. This was odd, because the place was crowded. During a speech by Sen. McConnell, I noticed something odd. There, in the back of the crowd next to the doorway into the room, was Dr. Thomas. I wasn't the only one to see him, as a very prominent member of society in the area nearly fainted when she saw a portrait of the Good Doctor which was hanging nearby. You can guess why.
The only thing of note that happened while I was filming the exterior was that on the upper left hand window (which I was compelled to tape) and the center upstairs window (ditto), I couldn't zoom in. If I did, there would be no focus, and the camera would zoom its self out to the widest view possible. It did this several times, and only on those two windows. I can't figure out if it was a malfunction of equipment, if "something" didn't want to be seen...or if, perhaps, The Good Doctor Thomas simply wanted everyone to see his entire house...who knows.
Any Ideas?
