I was just looking though the forum, and I noticed no one mentioned the Mothman. Most of the events happened in the late 1960's, but several people around Point Pleasant, West Virginia still claim to see the Mothman every now and then.
Many of you may have seen the Mothman Prophecies movie that came out a couple years ago. A lot of my friends thought it was a pretty decent movie, and maybe if I wasn't obessed with reading/researching Mothman I would have agreed with them. Some of the stuff in the movie was based on actual events (the collapsing of the silver bridge, descriptions of the creature, and the whole thing about predicting great tragedies), but soooooo much was left out.
Most of the Mothman sitings occurred in 1966 and 1967 - most of the sitings stopped when the Silver Bridge that connects Gallipolis, OH with Point Pleasant, WV over the Ohio River collapsed on December 15, 1967.
A great majority of the sitings were in the "TNT Area". This area is now a wildlife management area, but during WWII the military used it to store ammunition and other equipment in hidden domes scattered throughout the area - and that's how it got the TNT name.
Everyone who saw the creature described it as looking like a very tall man (about 8 feet) with large wings similar to a moth's, with a head kind of sunken into it's shoulders, and big glowing red eyes. It moved extremely fast, and was known to chase cars. People in the area were terrified.
There are several theories involving the origins of the creature:
1. The idea discussed in the movie about it being a prediction of great tragedy. Many people all over the world have claimed to have seen this mothlike creature. It is always seen before huge tragedies that take human life - there were sitings at Chernobyl in Russia (nuclear disaster) and in England during all of the bombings in WWII. Many think the Mothman appeared in Point Pleasant to warn people about the Silver Bridge disaster.
2. Aliens/UFOs. During the time of the Mothman sitings, there was also an increase in UFO sitings in the area. There were also mysterious "men in black". These men always wore dark suits, were very short, had piercing black eyes that never seemed to blink, and looked oriental. They would track down and question people who claimed to see the Mothman, and threaten them if they went to the authorities. Because of this, many people believe the Mothman could have been an alien.
3. Chief Cornstalk's Curse. Cheif Cornstalk was a Shawnee Chief in the area at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He was captured by the white soldiers and killed. But before he died, he put a curse on the town for 200 years. Since it was almost 200 years after he was killed, many believe the Silver Bridge collapse was a result of his curse.
Point Pleasant and the TNT Area is definitely an interesting place to explore...I make a trip down there every year! You can still walk back to the old domes, but most are sealed up. I have some pictures on my site: www.graveaddiction.com/tnt.html . And my absolute favorite mothman site is www.mothmanlives.com.
OK, I think I've rambled on long enough
